Abia Government Assures Compensation for Land Donors in Proposed Airport Project
The Abia State Government has announced that land donors for the proposed Abia International Airport in Nsulu will be duly compensated in accordance with the Land Use Act. This assurance follows the commencement of survey activities at the project site, despite protests from some members of the affected communities.
Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, stated that the government is committed to ensuring that proper enumeration of lands is conducted and compensation paid to all rightful landowners.
The statement came in response to a protest by some indigenes of the Umunna Nsulu community over alleged exclusion from the airport project negotiations. The protest occurred as survey activities began on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
Mr. Chukwumerije explained that extensive discussions had already been held with representatives from the seven donor communities, facilitated by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, and the Special Assistant on Lands and Housing, Okorougo Aji.
To address concerns raised by the protesters, Mr. Ajagba reassured the Umunna Nsulu community that any excluded stakeholders would be appropriately engaged in subsequent discussions.
The Commissioner highlighted the joint survey activities being carried out between the Office of the Surveyor General of Abia State and representatives of the donor communities, including youth leaders. He emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process.
“The government is committed to addressing all grievances and ensuring that the airport project benefits all stakeholders, especially those who have donated their lands for this ambitious project,” Chukwumerije said.
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its determination to see the airport project through, stating that it will enhance economic growth and development in the state. Meanwhile, it has called on all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperative as the process unfolds.
