Afe honored with lifetime achievement award by ILA

On April 11, 2025, in Ado Ekiti, Nigeria, the International Law Association (ILA) Nigerian Branch presented its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Afe Babalola, SAN.
The revered founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) received the honor during the President’s Dinner and Award Night, a highlight of the 8th Annual International Law Conference hosted at ABUAD.
The ceremony drew an impressive gathering of legal experts and dignitaries, including Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN, ILA President, and Hon. Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, Gambia’s Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment, who served as the special guest.

Additionally, Ambassador Muhamadou Musa Njie of the ECOWAS Commission and other distinguished scholars enriched the event with their presence.
A keynote discussion, moderated by Dr. Adenike Akinsemolu, allowed Babalola to share his inspiring journey from humble beginnings to legal eminence.
He recounted his dedication to education and nation-building, which led to ABUAD’s establishment as a model institution.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of agricultural education in strengthening Africa’s trade and food security.
Babalola emphasized that investing in agriculture would transform Africa into a global food supplier, attracting foreign investments.
Meanwhile, the ILA also honored Emmanuel Latona Adedeji with the Emerging Star Award and Ayodeji Asala with the Service Award for their outstanding contributions to international law.
Professor Olawuyi praised Babalola’s legacy, calling him a beacon for future lawyers. He highlighted the ILA’s mission to advance international law, noting Babalola’s alignment with its ideals. Founded in 1873, the ILA now has 4,500 members across 45 branches, fostering legal scholarship worldwide.
The Nigerian Branch remains committed to promoting legal excellence through conferences and seminars.
