AI Dependency Among Students Blamed for Poor JAMB Results: Tochi Raises Concerns

Popular media personality Tochi has sparked a conversation on social media after reacting to recent statistics from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which revealed that over 75% of candidates scored below 200 in the latest Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a post shared via Instagram Stories, Tochi attributed the alarming performance to the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. According to him, the rise of such technologies has led to a decline in critical thinking, reading, and independent research among students.
“With the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, many students have abandoned critical study, reading, and independent research in favor of copying and pasting responses,” Tochi wrote. “Some people can’t even curate a message without ChatGPT.”
His statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that students have become overly dependent on technology, while others argue that AI tools, if used properly, can enhance learning rather than diminish it.
JAMB’s latest result statistics have reignited the debate on the quality of education in Nigeria and the impact of emerging technologies on academic integrity and performance.
Education experts continue to call for a balanced approach—encouraging students to use AI responsibly while still prioritizing foundational skills like reading, comprehension, and analytical thinking.
