Airline Operators Applaud Removal of Four Import Levies to Boost Aviation Sector

Nigerian airline operators have welcomed the federal government’s decision to suspend four key import levies, calling the move a major relief to an aviation industry under pressure from high operating costs.

The levies, which were applied to aviation equipment and spare parts, had been cited by airline firms as contributing to increased ticket prices and reduced service frequency. Industry leaders say suspending these charges will help them maintain safer operations and improve profitability.

The government said the suspended levies will be in effect temporarily while a review of aviation import policies is conducted. Officials emphasized that the move aims to reduce barriers to maintenance and aircraft acquisition.

Airline CEOs expressed optimism, stating that the change could stabilize the sector, promote growth, and improve connectivity both domestically and internationally. Some also warned that long-term reform will still be needed to address structural challenges such as fuel subsidies and airport infrastructure.
