Anambra: Gov Soludo Declares ADC, Labour Party ‘Dead’ After By-election Blow

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has delivered a stinging verdict on opposition parties following the state’s weekend by-elections. Addressing supporters in Nanka, the governor asserted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Labour Party (LP) have become politically irrelevant in the state.

Soludo criticized Peter Obi—his predecessor and former Labour Party flagbearer—who had campaigned aggressively for ADC candidates in the polls. The governor dismissed those efforts, emphasizing that even Obi’s home constituency in Onitsha North rejected the coalition.

“ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday… Labour Party is dead,” Soludo said before cheering supporters.

The victory that cemented Soludo’s claim came after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APGA’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu winner of the Anambra South Senatorial by-election with 90,408 votes. His opponents—APC’s Azuka Okwuosa and ADC’s Donald Amangbo—secured 19,847 and a meagre 2,889 votes respectively.

Celebrating the outcome, Soludo commented that the election was meant to be a barometer for ADC’s influence—and it failed starkly.

“We won with about 77 per cent, a very emphatic statement,” he said.
