(DDM) – Traditional rulers in Asaba have declared full support for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, insisting he should remain in office until 2031.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the endorsement came during a courtesy visit to Government House led by the Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge.
The delegation of chiefs and community leaders commended the governor’s infrastructure drive, particularly ongoing road projects and human capital initiatives across Delta State.
Prof. Azinge highlighted the governor’s commitment to development but requested greater inclusion of Asaba indigenes in governance.
He further called for the revival of the International Conference Centre, which has remained underutilized despite its potential as an economic hub.
The monarch stressed that Asaba, as the state capital, deserves better city planning, improved healthcare, functional schools, and reliable water supply.
He also urged the administration to extend its focus to surrounding communities, arguing that capital development must be holistic.
In his remarks, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the royal endorsement and pledged to deliver projects that would transform Asaba.
He pointed to ongoing road resurfacing works, stormwater drainage systems, and the reconstruction of major landmarks such as Summit Junction and the Head Bridge.
The governor assured that his MORE Agenda, focused on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace, would continue to guide his policies.
Observers note that the endorsement by Asaba’s traditional council adds momentum to growing calls by aides and supporters for Oborevwori’s re-election in 2027.
Chief Godwin Okporoko, a senior aide on security matters, had earlier declared that there was “no vacancy in Government House until 2031.”
Analysts believe the latest royal backing solidifies Oborevwori’s hold on the capital city, a politically strategic base in Delta North.
However, critics argue that early endorsements risk shutting out opposition voices and may trigger political tension as the 2027 race approaches.
They also caution that performance-based endorsements should be balanced with genuine accountability to ensure citizens remain at the centre of governance.
Supporters of the governor insist that his rapid response to road and drainage challenges in Asaba proves he is attentive to local needs.
The Asagba’s appeal for better city planning also echoes concerns of residents who fear uncontrolled urban expansion is undermining Asaba’s future prospects.
Urban development experts argue that without modern planning, the city could face worsening traffic congestion, flooding, and housing shortages.
The International Conference Centre, once envisioned as a hub for global events, remains dormant, with stakeholders pressing for urgent revitalization under Oborevwori’s watch.
With traditional rulers now openly backing him, the governor is expected to consolidate his base ahead of 2027, while projecting himself as a leader with both royal and grassroots legitimacy.
The endorsement also signals how Delta’s political power blocs are gradually aligning around Oborevwori’s leadership despite lingering regional demands for greater inclusivity.
