BREAKING: PENGASSAN suspends nationwide strike

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has temporarily suspended its nationwide strike against the Dangote Petroleum Refinery following marathon negotiations brokered by the Federal Government.

The strike, which began on Sunday, September 28, 2025, was sparked by alleged anti-union practices at the refinery, including the dismissal of over 800 Nigerian workers who joined the union.

Moreover, key terms of the agreement which led to the suspension of the strike include that Dangote Group will immediately begin the process of reabsorbing the disengaged staff into other companies within the group with no loss of pay.

Also, PENGASSAN will start the process of calling off the strike and no worker will be victimized arising from their role in the impasse between Dangote and PENGASSAN.

PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo, emphasized that the union is taking the “moral high ground” by suspending the strike despite having strong doubts about the sincerity of the Dangote Group.

He warned that if any part of the agreement is broken, the union will resume the industrial action without notice.

The Federal Government’s mediation team, led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, played a pivotal role in brokering the peace.

Dingyadi reminded both parties that the right of workers to unionize in accordance with Nigerian law must be respected.
