Catholic priest abducted by gunmen in Imo

Gunmen abducted Reverend Father John Ubaechu, parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church in Izombe, Imo State, on Sunday evening. The assailants seized him along Ejemekwuru Road while he traveled to a clergy retreat, sparking panic among local worshippers and residents.

Patrick Mbarah, representing the Archdiocesan Secretariat, urgently urged Christians and the public to pray for Ubaechu’s safe return. The church emphasized collective spiritual intervention, reflecting deepening anxiety over worsening insecurity in southeastern Nigeria.

Imo State Police Command swiftly confirmed the abduction, launching a manhunt for the kidnappers. Spokesperson Henry Okoye assured residents that investigators are pursuing credible leads to rescue the priest unharmed.

“We have mobilized tactical units to track the perpetrators and secure Father Ubaechu’s freedom,” Okoye declared. He appealed for community cooperation, urging witnesses to share tips via designated hotlines or police stations.

Authorities disclosed an ongoing “intelligence-driven operation” targeting criminal networks linked to recent kidnappings. Okoye reaffirmed the police’s commitment to dismantling groups terrorizing communities in Oguta and neighboring LGAs.

Meanwhile, no group has claimed responsibility, leaving motives unclear. Speculation swirls around possible ransom demands or sectarian tensions, though officials caution against premature conclusions.

Residents voiced frustration over recurrent kidnappings, citing inadequate security measures. “We’re tired of living in fear,” said a parishioner, demanding stronger government action to protect vulnerable communities.

The Catholic Church intensified calls for divine mercy, organizing vigils across dioceses. Local leaders implored security agencies to prioritize Ubaechu’s release, noting his role
