‘Certificate Forgery’ : Atiku Demands Probe Into Tinubu, Ministers’ Certificates

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent and transparent probe into the academic and professional credentials of all members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) beginning with President Bola Tinubu.
Atiku made the call on Wednesday through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, following the resignation of Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, who stepped down over alleged certificate forgery.
The former vice president described Nnaji’s resignation as another proof of what he called a “deep moral crisis” within Tinubu’s administration.
He accused the president of setting a poor ethical example, claiming that controversies surrounding Tinubu’s own academic records and identity have cast a long shadow over his government.
“This episode is not isolated. It reflects a pattern — a rot that begins from the very top,” Atiku wrote. “The man who occupies the office of President has for decades been enmeshed in controversies surrounding his identity, age, and academic records.”
Atiku referenced the Chicago State University saga and other court filings, alleging that Tinubu’s failure to clarify his records had “institutionalized falsehood” in public service.
He said that this culture of deception has now extended to ministers and aides who, according to him, “falsify documents and desecrate the moral foundation of governance.”
The former vice president said Nigerians deserve to know the truth about those managing their lives and resources.
“I call for a transparent investigation into the credentials of all members of the Federal Executive Council, beginning with President Bola Tinubu himself,” he said.
Atiku also criticised the president for allowing Nnaji to resign voluntarily, instead of dismissing and prosecuting him for alleged forgery.
“Uche Nnaji should not have been allowed the courtesy of resignation. He should have been dismissed and prosecuted for deceit and falsification,” he added.
He accused Tinubu’s administration of being “an assembly of forgers and impostors masquerading as public servants.”
Atiku further questioned the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly failing to detect Nnaji’s forged credentials during ministerial screening.
He compared the agency’s scrutiny of Nnaji with its previous decision to block Nasir El-Rufai’s appointment over security concerns.
“The same DSS that screened out El-Rufai cleared Uche Nnaji. Their failure of due diligence has made Nigeria a global embarrassment,” Atiku said.
He concluded that Tinubu, his cabinet, and the DSS must be held accountable for what he called the “institutionalization of forgery as state policy.”
Nnaji’s resignation on Tuesday followed an investigative report by PREMIUM TIMES, which claimed that the former minister did not complete his university education and submitted forged credentials.
Nnaji, however, insists that his decision to step down was to respect due process, not an admission of guilt.
