Court dissolves 13-year marriage over sexual starvation, marital discord

A Grade A Customary Court sitting in the Mapo area of Ibadan has formally dissolved a 13-year-old marriage between Mr. Durojaye Akingbade and his estranged wife, Olabisi, following allegations of persistent marital conflict and sexual denial.

Presiding over the matter, the Court President, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, ruled that the union had broken down irretrievably and upheld the petitioner’s request to end the marriage.

She declared that the court had no legal basis to compel an unwilling party to remain in the relationship.

In the interest of peace, Akintayo ordered both parties to go their separate ways and issued a restraining order against Olabisi, prohibiting her from harassing, threatening, or interfering in Akingbade’s private life henceforth.

During his testimony, Akingbade, a teacher by profession, stated that his marriage had been characterized by frequent disputes and lack of cooperation from his wife since the onset.

He claimed that Olabisi stopped taking his instructions and neglected her duties as a wife and mother.

According to him, “Olabisi stopped cooking for me and our children. For a long period, the children survived on meals from relatives.

He further alleged that his wife had denied him sexual relations for three years.

“Prior to that, I had to force my way through to get my conjugal rights,” he told the court.

He added that despite their strained relationship, Olabisi refused to vacate the marital home, prompting him to disconnect the electricity supply to her section of the residence.

However, in her defense, Olabisi, who is also a teacher, rejected most of the claims made by her husband.

She described Akingbade as a serial womaniser who often mimicked questionable advice from his peers.

According to her, he frequently returned home to enforce sexual expectations reportedly encouraged by his friends.

She disclosed that she withdrew from sexual intimacy with him after he claimed to have contracted a sexually transmitted infection.

“He even accused me of infecting him and pointed to the death of his younger brother from AIDS,” she said.

Olabisi further revealed that Akingbade married three other women between 2020 and 2024 without informing her.

She also noted that her husband’s mother had always had undue influence over him and their marriage.

After considering the submissions, the court found sufficient grounds to grant the divorce and formally terminated the union.
