Court Report: Nnamdi Kanu Apologizes as Case Resumes with New Legal Teams

The trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, resumed in court today with significant changes in legal representation. Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), appeared subdued and contrite as he faced Justice Omotoso, the new judge handling the case.

A major development in the proceedings was the introduction of a new defense team led by Kanu Agabi, SAN. On the prosecution side, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, now leads the legal team against Kanu.

During the hearing, Kanu tendered profuse apologies for his past conduct, particularly for his rascally behavior at the last sitting. He directed his apologies to Justice Omotoso, requesting that they be extended to the former judge. He also expressed remorse to Awomolo and the prosecution team, as well as to his own defense lawyers, whom he admitted to treating unfairly.

Justice Omotoso acknowledged Kanu’s apology, noting that when the case began, Kanu was 47 years old but is now 57. He remarked that the prolonged legal battle must have had a significant impact on Kanu’s mental state.

Awomolo, SAN, also accepted the apology, stating that he understood the emotional and psychological toll of the trial on Kanu. His defense team similarly accepted the apology, signaling a shift in tone as the case moves forward.

Following the proceedings, the court adjourned the case to April for further hearings.
