CSOs demand transparency in N6Billion Police uniform contract

Abuja, Nigeria – A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has demanded full transparency from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) regarding a controversial N6 billion uniform contract.

Specifically, they submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to uncover procurement details amid allegations of financial misconduct.

Furthermore, reports suggest the contract was awarded under questionable circumstances, prompting public outcry.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Ezenwa Nwagwu, Executive Director of Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA), stressed the coalition’s dedication to accountability.

He explained that the FOI request followed alarming reports of irregularities in the contract’s execution.

“We seek answers, not accusations, to ensure public funds are properly managed,” Nwagwu stated.

Additionally, he emphasized the need to restore trust in the police force by upholding transparency.

Allegations of Financial Mismanagement

Recent reports allege that the NPF mismanaged over N234 billion under its current leadership.

Notably, the N6 billion uniform contract was reportedly split into 66 smaller contracts to avoid scrutiny.

Moreover, all contracts were allegedly awarded to a single company, Crown Natures Nigeria Plc.

Nwagwu questioned this approach, especially since the 2024 budget already allocated N7.34 billion for uniforms.

“Did the IGP unlawfully approve a N6 billion contract beyond his authority?” he asked.

Call for Investigation

Beyond the FOI request, the coalition petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to investigate the allegations.

“This step ensures accountability, not blame,” Nwagwu clarified.

Additionally, CSOs raised concerns about police barracks being sold to individuals with insider connections.

“Was due process followed?” he demanded.

Advocacy for Reform and Accountability

The coalition reiterated its push for police reform, linking accountability with institutional efficiency.

“A trustworthy police force requires proper fund management,” Nwagwu asserted.

He also highlighted that transparency strengthens public confidence and improves security delivery.

The CSOs urged the NPF to respond promptly to their FOI request.

They also called on authorities to enforce procurement laws and rectify any irregularities.

As public pressure grows, the coalition hopes its efforts will foster greater accountability in Nigeria’s policing system.
