Dangote Says Refinery Project Is Creating Jobs, Not Displacing Workers

Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Industries, has denied claims that jobs are being displaced by the operations of the Dangote Refinery, insisting instead that the project is generating thousands of new employment opportunities across Nigeria.

During a recent briefing, Dangote highlighted the planned deployment of 4,000 CNG-powered trucks, which he said would create at least 24,000 jobs — including roles for drivers, mechanics, fleet managers, and other personnel. He said none of these roles are automatable, emphasizing: “We have not displaced any jobs; we are creating many more.”

Dangote also outlined benefits for his workforce: salaries at three times the national minimum wage, life insurance, health insurance covering spouses and children, and lifelong pension plans.

He noted that since the refinery began operations in September 2024, the volume of petrol exports has surged, helping reduce fuel queues that had crippled Nigeria for decades. The refinery’s capacity is seen as a strategic lever for domestic economic growth, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings.
