“Disgraceful” – Ohanaeze blasts Soludo, Ekwunife, Ukachukwu over campaign hostilities

(DDM) – The apex Igbo sociocultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a stern warning to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, his wife Nonye Soludo, Senator Uche Ekwunife, and Nicholas Ukachukwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, over what it described as “disgraceful politicking” ahead of the November 9 Anambra governorship election.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the group condemned the conduct of the politicians, saying it represents a shameful departure from the cultural dignity and values the Igbo people are renowned for.

In a statement signed by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President-General, and Chinemeze Ohia, National Spokesman, Ohanaeze described the campaigns as divisive, propaganda-driven, and laced with hostility.

The organisation said it felt compelled to intervene after observing what it called the “unsettling behaviour” of the key contenders in Anambra’s governorship race.

According to the group, Governor Soludo has been particularly culpable for instigating a “repugnant campaign of slander” against his opponents.

The statement lamented that the negative trend of hate speech, smear tactics, and toxic exchanges not only undermines the candidates but also damages the collective image of the Igbo nation.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo feels compelled by its foundational mission to address the unsettling behaviour exhibited by prominent political figures,” the statement declared.

It stressed that the descent into slander “represents a significant departure from the hallmark of dignity and respect our people are known for.”

The organisation expressed disappointment over the verbal clashes between Nonye Soludo and Senator Uche Ekwunife, describing them as “a lamentable affront to both motherhood and womanhood.”

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly holds Governor Soludo accountable for instigating this repugnant campaign of slander against his political adversaries,” the statement added.

It categorically condemned the verbal exchanges between Soludo’s wife and Ekwunife, saying leaders of their calibre should rise above such pettiness.

The group emphasized that it remains politically neutral and is not endorsing any party for now.

However, it warned that if the current “unscrupulous campaign tactics” continue, it may be forced to throw its weight behind a neutral candidate as a way of preserving public decency.

According to Ohanaeze, “continued participation in such a disgraceful charade raises serious questions about the moral and ethical qualifications of these candidates to govern Anambra State.”

The sociocultural group urged all parties to return to issue-based campaigns, stressing that Anambra politics should be guided by policy discussions, governance ideas, and respect for cultural values rather than insults and propaganda.

As the November 9 election draws closer, analysts say the intervention of Ohanaeze underscores growing concerns about the divisive tone of the campaigns.

Observers also note that Anambra has long prided itself on producing visionary leaders, and the fear is that toxic politics may undermine this legacy.

The warning from Ohanaeze may further shape the electoral discourse in the coming weeks, as candidates are now under pressure to prove their seriousness with ideas instead of personal attacks.
