Manchester United are preparing for a crucial summer transfer window that has to end with Ruben Amorim’s squad being sufficiently bolstered for his first full season.
In order to do so, they must start offloading any players deemed surplus to requirements – even if that means simply freeing up space on the wage list by not renewing contracts.
All of Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans will be departing the club when their terms expire at the end of June.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed today that Evans, 37, and Heaton, 38, are ‘set to leave’ with the ‘plan confirmed’ that they’ll be pulling the curtains on their respective Red Devils careers. Reports have also suggested that the senior duo will then look to hang up their boots – and gloves – entirely before potentially taking on coaching roles at Old Trafford.
Evans and Heaton now in their final two months at United
Both have endured injury-plagued seasons across 2024/2025. Evans, remarkably, featured rather prominently throughout last season due to the unprecedented injury crisis that Erik ten Hag was forced to navigate.
The centre-half made 30 appearances in total, including 17 times as a starter. His involvements in United’s FA Cup campaign meant that he completed his full set of major honours as a Red when the side lifted the trophy at Wembley last May, having now won everything on offer to him during his two stints in M16.
Back in November, Evans started in Amorim’s maiden game in the dugout away to Ipswich Town but proceeded to suffer a setback, rendering him unavailable since December.
Heaton, on the other hand, has only ever been utilised very sparingly. He’s been given the nod on three occasions since returning to United in 2021, while he was also called up by Gareth Southgate as a training goalkeeper for last summer’s Euros, in which England reached the final.
