Ex-Abia Deputy Gov Ude Oko Chukwu Defects from PDP to LP

Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, who served as Deputy Governor of Abia State from 2015 to 2023, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Labour Party (LP).
In a resignation letter dated August 5, 2025, addressed to his ward leadership in Ohafia Local Government Area, Oko Chukwu cited personal reasons for leaving the party. He expressed gratitude for his time with the PDP and the opportunities it afforded him.
The formal defection was marked by a reception held today in his hometown of Nkporo. Abia State Governor Alex Otti—also of the Labour Party—personally welcomed him and celebrated his move as a significant political realignment in the state.
Oko Chukwu’s transition to LP comes amid ongoing political upheaval in Abia, where hundreds of officials and party members from both the PDP and APC have defected to the Labour Party, strengthening its position ahead of the 2027 elections.
This development signals continued shifts in Abia’s political landscape, potentially altering the balance of power as the 2027 elections approach.
