Fact Check: Did Trump Truly Threaten to End Tinubu’s 2027 Ambition?

A viral claim making the rounds on social media alleged that U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to block President Bola Tinubu from winning re-election in 2027.
The post, which spread like wildfire across Nigerian social media, sparked heated arguments and raised eyebrows among politically aware Nigerians.
But a thorough fact-check has now set the record straight.
Nigeria is still two years away from the 2027 general elections, yet the political atmosphere is already heating up.
Although official campaigns are yet to begin, alliances, defections, and online propaganda are shaping the pre-election narrative.
As was the case before the 2023 polls, misinformation is once again becoming a powerful tool in the political space.
The controversial claim originated from a Facebook user identified as Onyee Arangee.
In a video lasting about three minutes, he alleged that Trump had “serious dislike” for Tinubu and would ensure the Nigerian president lost in 2027.
He went further to suggest that Western nations were secretly manipulating Nigeria’s politics. The video immediately triggered mixed reactions, with some users believing the claim while others dismissed it as political mischief.
However, a fact-check by Dubawa, a reputable fact-checking organisation, dismissed the story as false.
According to their findings, no credible media outlet has reported Trump making such comments about Tinubu or Nigeria’s future elections.
A review of Trump’s recent public speeches and interviews showed that his focus remains squarely on U.S. domestic issues ranging from immigration and economic challenges to his multiple legal battles.
The only reference Trump has made to Nigeria in recent times was during a heated debate on illegal immigration into the United States.
At no point did he mention Tinubu or Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
This is also not the first time Trump’s name has been dragged into Nigeria’s political wars. In 2023, a doctored video circulated online, falsely claiming Trump had commented on Tinubu’s administration.
The clip was later exposed as an old NBC interview edited to mislead Nigerians.
The timing of the latest viral claim is significant. Opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, have all declared interest in contesting the 2027 election.
Discussions about forming a coalition to challenge Tinubu are already in progress. But so far, there has been no evidence of foreign leaders taking sides in Nigeria’s political battle.
For now, the fact remains clear: Donald Trump has not threatened Tinubu’s re-election bid. The viral post is baseless, misleading, and another example of how fake news continues to infiltrate Nigeria’s political space.
As the 2027 elections approach, Nigerians are urged to verify information before believing or sharing it.
