“Fear Of Losing Power Driving Politicians To Defect Between Political Parties”: Sam Adeyemi

Sam Adeyemi, Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, has expressed concern over the lack of empathy and compassion among some Nigerian leaders, accusing them of being out of touch with the challenges faced by the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Thursday, Adeyemi condemned political leaders for prioritizing the retention of power over efforts to enhance the wellbeing of the people.
“The fear of losing power drives many leaders to defect between political parties,” he said.
“Some have clearly lost touch with the plight of the poor; they lack empathy and compassion.”
Adeyemi emphasised the need to create a system that supports leaders in making wise decisions and steering the country toward progress.
He also claimed that the country’s political arena is largely controlled by “godfathers” who decide leadership outcomes, sidelining the will of the people.
“This system breeds leaders who become corrupt and forget the people they are meant to serve,” he added.
Adeyemi highlighted former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an example of a leader who stood against ethnic-based politics, underscoring the value of national unity.
He also shared an incident where a foreigner voiced worry about rumours circulating in the Presidential Villa that blamed Northerners for the nation’s problems, cautioning that such divisions pose a serious threat to the country.
Adeyemi wrapped up by urging Nigerian leaders to engage more closely with the people and focus on advancing the nation rather than merely preserving their own positions.
