FG warns against politicizing Benue killings

The Federal Government has strongly condemned attempts to exploit recent Benue State violence for political gain.
Officials specifically warned against using the crisis as campaign material ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu visited Benue to assess the security situation firsthand.

During meetings with Governor Hyacinth Alia, Ribadu conveyed President Tinubu’s solidarity with affected communities.
“The President stands firmly with Benue during this tragic period,” Ribadu declared.
He emphasized the state’s agricultural importance, pledging federal support to restore stability to Nigeria’s “food basket.”
However, the security situation remains dire as attack casualties continue rising.
Governor Alia confirmed the death toll increased from 56 to 72 across Ukum and Logo LGAs, labeling the assaults as coordinated terrorism.
Traditional rulers provided alarming context about the crisis’ prolonged impact. HRH Daniel Abomtse revealed over 598 fatalities since 2011, with thousands displaced and dependent on government aid for survival.
Furthermore, HRH Iyokyaa Kaave described the economic collapse in Sankera’s agricultural heartland.
“Our education and healthcare systems have collapsed,” he stated, demanding immediate removal of armed herders from farmlands.
Similarly, HRH Godwin Onah reported 2,000 farmer deaths in Agatu since 2013.
He criticized the continued occupation of communities by herdsmen, urging decisive military intervention to reclaim territories.
In response, Governor Alia expressed optimism about Ribadu’s visit signaling renewed federal commitment.
He stressed the urgent need for coordinated security operations to protect farmers during planting season.
Nevertheless, analysts warn the crisis threatens national food security as farm abandonment spreads.
The violence has already caused significant yam production declines, risking nationwide shortages.
Consequently, pressure mounts on security agencies to dismantle militant networks operating in Benue.
Recent intelligence suggests sophisticated weaponry enables attackers to overwhelm local defenses.
As elections approach, observers caution against divisive rhetoric that could worsen tensions.
The Federal Government maintains that national unity remains paramount during this security challenge.
Ultimately, lasting solutions require addressing both immediate security gaps and underlying resource conflicts.
Experts recommend accelerated implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan to reduce farmer-herder clashes.
The international community continues monitoring developments, with UN agencies preparing humanitarian support for displaced populations.
Diplomatic sources indicate growing concern about the crisis’ regional implications.
For now, Benue residents await tangible security improvements as planting season progresses.
Many families face impossible choices between safeguarding their lives or cultivating crops for survival.
