FIFA ranks Nigeria number 1 in Africa but where in the world?

The world ranking of countries in women’s football has been unveiled by FIFA with Nigeria retaining the number one position.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria has been recognised as the number one country when it comes to women’s football in Africa by FIFA but where do they rank in the world?

Nigeria’s Super Falcons continue to lead African women’s football, holding steady at 36th place globally in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released on March 6, 2025. The team has maintained this position consistently since March 2024, keeping their 1,622 ranking points through the June, August, and December rankings.

Within Africa, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana follows at 53rd globally, with Morocco (61st), Zambia (62nd), and Ghana (66th) rounding out the continent’s top five teams.

The global rankings still show the United States at number one, with Spain (current world champions) in second place. Germany, England, and Japan complete the top five, followed by Sweden, Canada, Brazil, North Korea, and the Netherlands in the top ten.

FIFA highlighted that this first ranking release of 2025 includes a record 196 nations, with Djibouti making its debut at 195th place. The rankings reflect 127 international matches played recently, including African qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
