Fire outbreak destroys 60 shelters at IDP camp in Borno

A devastating fire broke out at the Government Senior Science Secondary School (GSSSS) Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Monguno, Borno State.
Consequently, dozens of families lost their shelters and personal belongings as flames consumed approximately 60 makeshift structures.
The incident occurred on Friday around 1:30 p.m., as confirmed by the Camp Chairman, Bulama Bukar Kutami. Meanwhile, the blaze destroyed food supplies, household items, and other valuables, though officials have not yet identified the exact cause. Additionally, authorities have not released estimates of the total losses incurred.
Fortunately, no lives were lost despite the widespread destruction. Immediately, firefighters, security personnel, and camp residents worked together to contain the fire. Furthermore, the Monguno Division deployed a patrol team to maintain order and prevent looting during the emergency.
The IDP camp, which houses people displaced by regional conflict, now struggles to provide urgent relief and temporary housing for victims. As a result, local authorities and humanitarian agencies are expected to assess the damage and organize aid for affected families.
Currently, investigations continue to determine the fire’s origin and evaluate the full scale of the destruction. Meanwhile, displaced residents await support to rebuild their lives after this tragic incident. The community remains hopeful as aid organizations prepare to intervene and restore stability to the camp.
The fire has highlighted the vulnerability of IDP camps to such disasters, underscoring the need for better safety measures. Moving forward, stakeholders must prioritize fire prevention strategies to protect displaced families. Until then, the affected individuals rely on emergency assistance to recover from this setback.
In the aftermath, survivors recount their losses while expressing gratitude for the swift response from emergency teams. Nevertheless, the road to recovery will require sustained efforts from both government and humanitarian partners. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by displaced communities in conflict-affected regions.
As relief efforts unfold, the camp’s residents remain resilient despite their hardships. Meanwhile, local leaders urge swift action to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations. The fire may have destroyed shelters, but the spirit of the community remains unbroken.
