Gbenga Edema resigns from NNPP amid internal crisis

Gbenga Edema has resigned as the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPP) 2024 Ondo governorship candidate, citing irreconcilable differences.

He submitted his resignation letter to NNPP’s Mahin Ward 11 chairman on May 9, publicly releasing it Sunday.

Edema blamed persistent infighting for crippling the party’s electoral viability. “Since joining last June, I’ve witnessed destructive internal conflicts that hinder growth,” he stated. The former candidate accused leadership of sabotaging his campaign through unethical decisions.

Specifically, Edema referenced an abandoned lawsuit that allegedly favored political opponents. “In 35 years of politics, I’ve never seen a party betray its own candidate this way,” he wrote. This action reportedly contradicted NNPP’s professed values and objectives.

The resignation follows Edema’s failed court challenge against APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa. While his next move remains unclear, analysts say this weakens NNPP’s Ondo State prospects ahead of future elections.

Edema emphasized his vision no longer aligns with NNPP’s direction. “I’m formally resigning immediately to pursue principled politics elsewhere,” his letter concluded. The party has yet to respond, but the departure exposes deepening fractures within its ranks.

Political observers note this development may trigger further defections as Ondo’s 2024 elections approach. Meanwhile, residents await Edema’s next steps while questioning NNPP’s capacity to field competitive candidates. The resignation underscores growing disillusionment among opposition politicians nationwide.

As parties realign ahead of the poll, this exit spotlights Nigeria’s recurring challenge of maintaining stable political structures. For NNPP, recovering from this setback will require urgent internal reforms and leadership changes to restore members’ confidence. The coming weeks will reveal whether Edema’s departure marks an isolated incident or signals wider disintegration.
