Gunmen Kill Abroad-Based Man in Edo Market

A Europe-based Nigerian man identified as Derrick has been shot dead by gunmen in Edo State.
According to reports, the attackers allegedly killed him over a gold necklace valued at millions of naira.
The incident happened over the weekend along Igun Street in Benin City.
Derrick was reportedly in the area to buy spare parts for his vehicle when the gunmen struck.
The spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the development on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
He said police had begun investigations to track down the suspects.
According to Yamu, the assailants trailed the victim before confronting him.
“He was checking for spare parts when the gunmen emerged and demanded his lumbar gold necklace,” Yamu said.
“But the victim asked why he should hand over the jewellery. His response seemed to anger them.
One of the gunmen then brought out a pump-action gun from their Lexus SUV and shot him twice in the leg,” he added.
The attackers allegedly removed the necklace before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses rushed Derrick to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Residents believe the criminals had closely monitored his movements before attacking.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Derrick, who had only just returned from Europe, was killed in broad daylight and stripped of his valuables.
The brazen daylight murder has sparked fear in the area, with residents calling for tighter security in Benin City.
The killing highlights the rising cases of violent robbery and targeted attacks against returnees believed to have wealth.
Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspects and recover the stolen items.
