Gunmen Kill Customs Officer in Kebbi

Gunmen struck again in Kebbi State on Monday, killing a Customs officer at the Fingila checkpoint in Dandi Local Government Area.
The assailants, numbering about seven and armed with sophisticated weapons, reportedly stormed the area on motorcycles and opened fire.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the attackers had earlier invaded nearby farms, harassing farmers and seizing their food.
In a chilling twist, they forced the farmers to eat part of their own meals before confiscating the rest.
“They told the farmers there would be no farming today,” said Malam Abdulrasheed, a resident of Fingila village.
After leaving the farms, the gunmen advanced toward the main road where they encountered the Customs officer.
The officer, who usually sat near a mosque close to the checkpoint, attempted to flee into a maize field when shots rang out.
The first bullet missed, but the second struck him, and a third shot proved fatal inside the field.
Two other Customs officers managed to escape the ambush by crawling through the maize plantation.
They sustained minor injuries but survived the attack.
Locals identified the slain officer as a native of Maiduguri in Borno State.
He had become a familiar figure in the community because of his daily presence near the mosque.
As of press time, the Nigeria Customs Service in Kebbi had not released an official statement on the killing.
Residents, however, remain on edge, as the incident adds to the wave of violent attacks terrorizing farming and border communities across the North West.
The killing also underscores the vulnerability of security personnel stationed in remote areas with limited reinforcements.
Community members are now urging security agencies to intensify patrols and secure farming zones, which have become repeated targets of armed groups.
This attack comes amid growing concerns about escalating violence in Kebbi and neighboring states, where gunmen continue to carry out raids, abductions, and killings despite government assurances of improved security.
