‘He is going to play’: Amorim’s latest Amad admission will be music to Utd fans’ ears

Despite there being initial fears that he would miss the remainder of the campaign, Amad Diallo is set to feature for Manchester United again before the summer.

While fans would, of course, be distressed by any player sustaining an injury, Amad’s, in particular, came as a gutting blow to Ruben Amorim and the Old Trafford faithful.

The Ivorian livewire was enjoying the most prolific top-flight season of his career to date and looked simply unplayable when finally granted a starting role following Erik ten Hag’s sacking. Amorim figured almost instantaneously in his tenure that if he wanted to be successful as head coach, Amad could play an influential part in it.

Amad notched a superb nine goals and eight assists prior to his setback, with 12 of those contributions (six goals and six assists) coming under Amorim alone.

He last featured on February 7 in the side’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Leicester City, after which it was confirmed that he had sustained an ankle injury and would be unavailable until further notice.

Then, reports suggested that supporters had most likely seen the last of the 22-year-old in 2024/2025 – as was the case for centre-half Lisandro Martinez when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament at the beginning of February.

In recent weeks, though, Amad himself has hinted at a potential return to action via social media posts containing an hourglass – and Amorim has now provided fans with a hugely promising update.

When addressing reporters at Carrington on Monday, the boss said of his winger: “I think he is going to play still this season. I don’t know when but we are really confident on that.”

The forthcoming two-legged Europa League quarter-final against Olympique Lyonnais will come too soon for Amad, given that he’s not even training yet. But the prospect of having him back for any potential semi-final or final is certainly something for Reds to cling to.
