How Imo’s next governor will emerge

The governor of Imo State, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma CON has given what is yet, the most direct indication of his commitment to upholding the Imo Charter of Equity, since after the November Governorship election in the State.

Speaking to a bipartisan creme de la creme of Owerri zone political class in the Imo State Government House, yesterday, the governor made clear some of the qualities that would define the next governor of the State.

Primarily, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Southeast Governors’ Forum made it clear that his successor must come from the ruling Party, the APC. In line with his progressive ideals, he didn’t mince words in declaring his unflinching commitment to ensuring that APC continues its dominance of the Imo political landscape, and urged those interested in becoming governor after him to be deliberate about their loyalty and support to the All Progressives Congress.

He also allayed fears of ignoring the Charter of Equity, which he reminded his guests, has become a codified document, having been debated on and passed by the Imo State House of Assembly. He emphasized that the Imo Charter of Equity is no longer a mere political agreement or an agitation by a few political gladiators, but a legislative document, which he is bound by law and good conscience to ensure its implementation.

He however clarified that this important agreement is aimed at ensuring fairness and justice in the distribution of political power across the three political zones in the State, stating that the charter was not designed to benefit any particular individual or some individuals but the entirety of Imo people.

Speaking further, the governor urged the people of Owerri zone to go back home and work for genuine reconciliation among themselves, reminding them that their political problems stem from both internal and external misunderstanding and miscalculations. He advised them to work for an atmosphere devoid of rancour and rather promote peace, unity of purpose, tolerance, consensus and sacrifice.

On the speculations about seeking a trustworthy and loyal protege to succeed himy the governor dismissed such insinuations, insisting that whoever will succeed him must commit to driving the people’s agenda for prosperity, peace, and development and not his or any other person’s personal agenda. He made it clear that anyone or group of people who are searching for the most appropriate person to succeed him most look out for a competent, bold and courageous candidate, and not just about anyone, because governance is a very serious business.

The meeting which had in attendance top politicians of Owerri zone extraction with varying political and party persuasions commended the governor for his unyielding and undeniable commitment to the overall development of Imo State and for achieving a level of political stability and security in the State.

Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho, multimillionaire oil and gas tycoon and former Minister of Interior, Chief Mrs. Kema Chikwe, a scholar, former Minister of the Federal Republic, former Ambassador and former Women Leader of the PDP,  Retired Military General C.R.V Ihekire and Hon. Akarachi Amadi, representing Mbaitoli/ Ikeduru in the House of Representatives are among those who spoke at the meeting.
