Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has announced a significant upgrade to the minimum wage for civil servants, raising it from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000 per month. The announcement was made during a meeting with labour union leaders in Government House, as confirmed by Vanguard.
The revised wage structure also includes substantial salary increases in key sectors:
Doctors’ salaries have jumped from ₦215,000 to ₦503,000 per month.
Tertiary education lecturers now earn ₦222,000, up from ₦119,000.
Governor Uzodimma attributed the wage enhancements to a sharp rise in the state’s revenues. He cited growth in internally generated revenue (IGR) from ₦400 million to over ₦3 billion monthly and a spike in federal allocations from ₦5–7 billion to ₦14 billion.
He also announced a ₦16 billion payout for pension arrears, stating, **”When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows.”**
Labour leaders, including Mr. Uchechigemezu Nwigwe of the Nigeria Labour Congress, hailed the wage revision as a triumph for Imo’s workforce. “Uzodimma has made Imo one of the states with the highest minimum wage in the country,” Nwigwe said.
