INEC Disqualifies 157 Aspiring Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disqualified 157 associations seeking registration as political parties after they failed to pass its initial screening.
INEC also confirmed that 14 associations successfully scaled through the first stage and are still under consideration.
In a statement released on Thursday by its spokesperson, Sam Olumekun, the commission explained that the decision followed a review of applications submitted by the associations.
He noted that the outcomes would be communicated to each group within 24 hours.
According to him, INEC received a total of 171 requests for registration.
The applications were assessed against Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79 of the Electoral Act 2022, and the commission’s 2022 Guidelines for Political Parties.
Olumekun added that interim chairpersons and secretaries of the 14 pre-qualified groups have been invited to a briefing at INEC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, September 17, at 11 a.m.
The associations will also be required to upload specified details on INEC’s online portal before physical verification begins.
The final decision on their eligibility will be made after officials verify all claims to ensure compliance with the legal framework.
He stressed that party registration remains an ongoing process under the law, and INEC will continue to consider fresh applications that meet the required criteria.
