One Manchester United star is reportedly in talks to make a surprise switch to the Serie A – despite having another three years remaining on his terms at Old Trafford.

This summer may well be a case of INEOS having to cut their losses with several signings if they truly want Ruben Amorim to succeed with the best tools at his disposal.

The likes of Rasmus Hojlund, who hasn’t scored in the Premier League since the start of December, springs to mind, along with injury-riddled players such as Luke Shaw and Mason Mount – the latter of which has endured an absolutely torrid United tenure thus far.

Mount signed for the Reds in a whopping £55 million deal in 2023, severing his 18-year ties with Chelsea in the process. It was a move that puzzled fans at the time, given that he had only one year remaining on his contract and would’ve become a free agent at the end of the 2023/2024 term, having shown no desire to extend his stay in West London.

Yet, United pursued the move anyway, and Mount put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth a reported £250,000 per week (Capology).

Nowadays, you’d be forgiven for forgetting he was a member of Amorim’s squad. Mount has made 32 United appearances in the one-and-a-half seasons he’s donned the iconic red, white and black. In turn, he’s missed a staggering 56 matches through numerous injury setbacks, with fitness issues proving unrelenting every time he makes a brief return to the pitch.

That hasn’t deterred other sides from gauging his interest in a potential Premier League exit, though. According to Inter Live, the Serie A leaders and Mount’s entourage are ‘working’ on an agreement with hopes of him succeeding veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

If Amorim’s comments last November are anything to go by, he’ll strongly oppose INEOS sanctioning the exit of the England international.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” said Amorim of his midfielder. “You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit, and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him,” the head coach continued. “I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”
