IPOB Cheers Alleged Canadian Verdict on APC, PDP As “Terrorist Organization”

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has welcomed what it calls a pivotal Canadian court decision allegedly declaring Nigeria’s leading political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—as terrorist organizations.

IPOB’s reaction came in a statement released on August 16, 2025, signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful.

The group hailed the ruling as a “defining moment” that reflects rising international awareness of Nigeria’s alleged political repression and human rights violations.

IPOB invoked historical context from the 1967–1970 civil war, expressing that lingering grievances continue to fuel its self-determination efforts. It reiterated its commitment to peaceful and lawful advocacy, distancing itself from violent methods.

However, these claims remain unconfirmed. Canadian judicial authorities have not validated the decision, and neither Nigeria’s federal government nor the APC or PDP have issued an official statement in response.

IPOB has been proscribed by Nigerian authorities since 2017—a designation it disputes, arguing it is a peaceful activism group.
