Iran Executes Man Convicted of Spying for Israel

Iran on Wednesday executed a man convicted of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad.
The judiciary announced that the man, Babak Shahbazi, was hanged after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.
According to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s news service, Shahbazi had been spying for Mossad since 2022.
Authorities said he passed sensitive information about facilities tied to Iran’s military, security, and telecommunications sectors.
Officials revealed that Shahbazi worked in the design and installation of industrial cooling systems.
This job gave him direct access to restricted sites. Mizan reported that he provided classified details to Mossad in exchange for money and the promise of foreign residency.
The judiciary stated that he was charged with “corruption on earth” and “waging war against God,” crimes that carry the death penalty in Iran. It remains unclear when Shahbazi was first arrested.
Since its brief war with Israel in June, Tehran has intensified its crackdown on espionage. Officials have vowed swift punishment for anyone accused of aiding Israel.
This is not the first high-profile execution linked to espionage. In August, Iranian authorities executed Roozbeh Vadi.
He worked for a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran and was convicted of giving Israel information about Iranian nuclear scientists and facilities.
In late July, Iran’s intelligence ministry announced the arrest of 20 alleged spies.
The group reportedly included Mossad operational agents, support operatives, and others linked to Israeli intelligence. Arrests were carried out in Tehran and several provinces.
Human rights organisations have long criticised Iran for its use of the death penalty.
Amnesty International and other groups say the country is the world’s second-largest executioner after China.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have remained high for decades, with both countries accusing each other of sabotage and covert attacks.
Iran often blames Mossad for assassinations of its nuclear scientists and attacks on military infrastructure.
The execution of Shahbazi underscores Tehran’s growing resolve to confront perceived Israeli threats.
It also reflects Iran’s broader strategy of linking internal security cases to its ongoing conflict with Israel.
As the Middle East faces rising instability, Iran’s actions signal a clear warning.
Anyone suspected of collaboration with Israel faces harsh punishment.
The judiciary’s swift rulings show that espionage remains one of the country’s most unforgivable crimes.
