JUST IN: Ibas officially transfers power to Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially resumed office in Rivers State following his reinstatement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking the end of the six-month emergency rule.

Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who served as Sole Administrator during the period, formally handed over power to Fubara on Thursday, urging residents to rally behind the governor as he returns to leadership.

In his farewell address, Ibas reflected on his tenure and the milestones achieved under his administration.

“Six months ago, President Tinubu entrusted me with the solemn responsibility of steering Rivers State through an extraordinary moment in its history. Today, I can say with conviction that, by the grace of God and our collective effort, the mandate has been accomplished,” he said.

He highlighted key achievements, including restoring law and order, conducting local government elections, reconstituting statutory boards and commissions, and passing the state budget through the National Assembly.

Ibas cautioned against the dangers of unrestrained power and political rivalry, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collaboration in sustaining democracy.

“As I hand back the reins of leadership to Sim Fubara, I do so with confidence and respect. I urge all Rivers people to support him wholeheartedly because leadership and followership is a shared responsibility,” he stated.

While reflecting on his time in office, Ibas expressed gratitude for the dedication of state bureaucrats, the wise counsel of statesmen, and the resilience of Rivers residents.

He concluded by calling on citizens to actively support governance, noting that a leader’s vision can only succeed with the backing of the people.

“For me, this is the closing of another chapter in a life devoted to service—at sea, in diplomacy, and now in governance,” he said.
