President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured four late Ogoni leaders with posthumous national awards nearly 30 years after their execution under General Sani Abacha’s military regime.
The honourees are Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Albert Badey, Chief Samuel Orage, and Chief Theophilus Orage.
Each was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of Nigeria’s top national honours.
The late leaders were part of a vanguard of Ogoni activists who resisted oppression and fought for justice in the Niger Delta.
Alongside renowned writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, they were executed in 1995 by Abacha’s government.
The killings sparked global outrage, triggered international sanctions, and marked one of the darkest chapters in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
By bestowing the awards, Tinubu signaled recognition of their sacrifices and contributions to the fight for fairness, equality, and democracy.
