Pope Francis, according to the Vatican, suffered a stroke about an hour after getting out of bed Monday morning and died within minutes.
The pontiff had been sick for several months, battling serious respiratory infections that left him with “a swollen face, almost deformed,’’ according to the Argentinian outlet La Nacion.
But he insisted on soldiering on, including when he visited inmates at a prison in Rome on Holy Thursday.
Meanwhile, this clarification comes approximately 12 hours after the initial announcement of his death.
With the cause of death now confirmed, attention will turn to funeral arrangements and preparations for the papal conclave, during which the College of Cardinals will choose the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
