Kaduna Police in Trouble as El-Rufai Petitions Service Commission

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has taken his battle with the Kaduna State Police Command to a new level by filing a formal petition before the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The petition, dated September 8 and addressed to the PSC Chairman, accuses the state’s Commissioner of Police and several officers of “unprofessional conduct, abuse of office, and serial violations of the Police Act 2020 and regulations.”

El-Rufai, in the petition, urged the Commission to launch an immediate and impartial investigation into what he described as unlawful and unconstitutional actions by the police.

He stressed that his complaint was not driven by personal grievances but by his responsibility as a citizen and public servant.

“I submit this petition with a profound sense of responsibility as a Nigerian who has served at both national and subnational levels, including eight years as governor of Kaduna State,” he wrote.

He argued that accountability and discipline within the police were critical to restoring public trust in law enforcement.

According to El-Rufai, his concerns go beyond political rivalry or personal disputes. He emphasized that the future of policing in Nigeria depends on strong regulatory action from the PSC.

“It is the duty of all citizens not only to support the Force but also to ensure that the Commission enforces discipline and promotes ethical conduct among all police officers,” he stated.

The petition comes just days after the Kaduna Police Command invited El-Rufai and six other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning over alleged criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.

A letter dated September 4 and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Uzainu Abdullahi directed the ADC Chairman in Kaduna to produce El-Rufai and other party leaders before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on September 8.

Those invited alongside the former governor included Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (known as “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (aka “Mikiya”).

The controversy deepened when police operatives sealed off the ADC’s state office on Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, just hours before a planned visit by the party’s Northwest leaders.

Witnesses reported heavy police presence around the building, blocking access and raising concerns of a politically motivated clampdown.

The PSC has not yet responded to El-Rufai’s petition.

However, the case highlights growing tensions between opposition politicians and security agencies in Kaduna State.

For El-Rufai, who insists the police must be held to account, the petition represents both a legal challenge and a test of institutional independence.
