Gunmen who abducted passengers from an 18-seater New Edo Line bus and a Toyota Camry along the Owan–Auchi Road have demanded a ransom of ₦15 million for each of the victims still in captivity.
The incident occurred on September 5, 2025, when the armed men blocked the highway and forced the vehicles to a halt.
The attackers herded several passengers into the surrounding forest, leaving families traumatized and desperate for answers.
Police later confirmed that 16 passengers were rescued during a security operation.
However, others remain in the custody of the kidnappers.
Among those still held is Gloria Ikhaghu, who had just completed the burial rites of her father in the Okpekpe community of Etsako East Local Government Area.
A family member of Ikhaghu, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the ransom demand.
He said the abductors called and insisted on ₦15 million for her release.
“We are begging Governor Monday Okpebholo and everyone to assist us in securing Gloria’s freedom. We don’t have that kind of money. We just buried her father, and raising ₦15 million is impossible,” the source said.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, said he was not aware of the ransom demand.
He, however, assured the public that security operatives are still combing the forests to rescue the victims.
The Owan–Auchi axis has become notorious for kidnappings and armed attacks in recent years. Travellers and local residents have repeatedly fallen victim to gunmen who exploit the dense forests for cover.
The latest abduction has renewed calls for stronger security measures along Edo highways, especially as kidnapping incidents surge across the state.
Between 2023 and 2024, several kidnappings along the Benin–Auchi and Benin–Ekpoma roads sparked protests by residents.
Communities accused security agencies of failing to protect travellers despite repeated attacks.
Families of victims often end up paying ransoms, while many cases remain unresolved.
The current demand of ₦15 million per victim has intensified pressure on Edo State authorities to act swiftly.
For the families of those still missing, each passing day brings deeper anxiety and fear.
They continue to hope for a safe return of their loved ones without further tragedy.
