“Love, Not Chains” — Made Kuti Shuts Down Haters of His Inter-Tribal Marriage

Afrobeat singer, Made Kuti, has responded with a message of unity and enlightenment after being subjected to a tribal attack online over his marriage to Inedoye, his childhood friend and partner of several years.
A social media user had targeted Kuti, describing him as a “foolish Yoruba man” for marrying an Igbo woman and invoking derogatory remarks about inter-ethnic unions. Instead of reacting with “anger”, Kuti said he felt “pity” for the individual, stressing that such views were rooted in ignorance and colonial mentalities.
“When I saw this post, it didn’t make me angry, I just felt pity for this person,” Kuti wrote, before urging young Africans to embrace knowledge, history, and unity. He reminded his audience that Africa’s great leaders — including Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Thomas Sankara, and his grandfather, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti — envisioned a continent built on solidarity and shared progress, not division.
He argued that holding on to ethnic superiority complexes was “slave mentality,” warning that anyone who still views inter-ethnic relationships with hostility remains bound by the psychological chains of colonialism.
“The healthiest way to free your mind is to read. Enlighten yourself with history and knowledge left by leaders… Free your mind,” Kuti added.
The Grammy-nominated musician, who tied the knot with Inedoye in a private ceremony earlier this year, has consistently used his platform to champion social consciousness, justice, and the vision of a united Africa.
