Man Utd face Liverpool competition in the race for Assane Diao

Manchester United have some company in the race for Como teenage sensation Assane Diao, as Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on the player.

As reported in recent days, the Red Devils have been monitoring the 19-year-old who has taken Serie A by storm following his January move from Real Betis. He has already bagged five goals in Italy’s top-flight, cementing himself as a pillar in Cesc Fabregas’ newly-promoted side.

The young forward can cover several positions upfront thanks to his electric pace, breathtaking dribbling skills and finishing touch. However, he feels at ease the most when playing as a left winger. This role allows him to cut to the centre and then aim for goal with his brilliant right foot.

In this sense, Diao could be the ideal profile to fit alongside Amad Diallo who’s capable of producing the same act, but on the opposite flank. These two wingers can be a devastating supporting cast for United’s next centre-forward whose identity remains uncertain at this stage, as the club is still searching the market for a new striker who can be an upgrade on their current options (Zirkzee and Hojlund).

However, CaughtOffside reveals Liverpool and Newcastle United as potential contenders for Diao’s services.

It should be noted that Como have some of the wealthiest owners in football, as the Djarum Group have an estimated fortune of €48 billion. So while they might not necessarily be under pressure to sell one of their biggest assets, the player’s desire to play for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League could play a determining role in the equation.

Therefore, the teenager might not dwell on the shores of Lake Como for too long, but luring him to Old Trafford won’t be an easy task for Man Utd amidst the growing interest in his services.

The youngster initially represented Spain at several youth levels but has recently declared for Senegal at the senior stage.
