Man Utd identify Morten Hjulmand as solution for midfield issues

Manchester United have set their sights on Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who could be the perfect profile to bolster Ruben Amorim’s midfield.

The Red Devils are aiming to bolster several departments in the summer, and the addition of a top-notch midfielder is certainly at the top of the manager’s wishlist. After all, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are expected to depart at the end of the season, while Kobbie Mainoo’s future remains unclear.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes has been the only constant in the middle of the park, but he needs a solid partner-in-crime who can lift some of the burden off his shoulders. At this stage, Manuel Ugarte is considered the safest choice, but the Uruguayan has had his ups and downs in his first campaign at Old Trafford.

So according to sources close to Stretty News, Man Utd have identified Hjulmand as the right profile for the role. The Dane is a 25-year-old central midfielder who often operates in front of the backline.

The Kastrup native is renowned for his ability to shield the defence, while also helping bring the ball forward thanks to his wide range of passing.

Hjulmand earned fame during his time at Lecce between 2021 and 2023 before being poached by Amorim’s Sporting CP for €20 million.

Under the guidance of the Portuguese tactician, the Denmark international emerged as one of the most sought-after defensive midfielders in Europe. However, the Lisbon-based giants armored him with a contract valid until 2028 and a release clause worth €80 million.

However, the Red Devils believe they can drive the price down to €50-60 million in negotiations. Hence, our sources believe Hjulmand could soon emerge as a serious candidate to join Amorim’s ranks next season, as the 40-year-old would be delighted to reunite with his old Sporting CP disciple.

The Man Utd boss has been linked with several of his former pupils, including Viktor Gyokeres and Trincao, but he missed out on signing Geovany Quenda, who instead chose Chelsea.
