Man Utd pinpoint Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg as summer priority

Manchester United are hellbent on signing Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg this summer following his exploits in the Championship.

Alongside fellow youngster Jobe Bellingham, the 17-year-old has been leading the Black Cats’ promotion push. Despite his tender age, the central midfielder has already cemented himself as a pillar in the middle of the park, producing four goals and one assist in his 34 appearances in the Championship.

The wonderkid’s former coach, Steven Richardson, sang his praise, hailing him as a ‘diamond’ while noting his ability to run as hard as the ‘Duracell Bunny’.

“To have a player like that – Sunderland have got an absolute diamond. He’s never not going to try. He’s always going to give everything until he can’t give anymore. He could probably play 100 to 180 minutes, I said before he’s like a Duracell bunny, but he’s controlled with it as well,” said Richardson.

“He’ll play his position and do his job. The other thing is, he knows exactly what everyone else should be doing as well.”

Due to his vast potential and exceptional promise, Rigg naturally attracted the attention of a plethora of Premier League clubs.

But while Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Brighton are all tracking him, CaughtOffside identifies Manchester United as the one to show the most intent.

The Red Devils are reportedly keen to prevail in the race for the England U19 starlet, even placing him near the top of their summer wishlist.

As the source explains, Rigg is a vastly popular figure at Carrington. Even Ruben Amorim agreed with the club directors’ assessment, thus giving the green light for the operation to land the teenager.

The Sunderland youth product primarily operates as a central midfielder, but can play further higher on the pitch if required. He has featured as an attacking midfielder on several occasions this season, and also took the right wing in some of his outings.
