Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, considering him the right profile to replace Andre Onana.
The Red Devils signed the Cameroonian international in the summer of 2023 following his exceptional campaign at Inter Milan. They were happy to splash £47 million for the custodian whom they identified as the right heir for David De Gea.
However, the 28-year-old has been far from convincing since his arrival at Carrington. While he certainly has the ability to pull off jaw-dropping saves at times, his knack for committing deadly blunders has created a feeling of unease at the back, with the supporters sensing the team could concede a silly goal at any given moment.
Therefore, there have been growing talks about Onana’s future at Old Trafford, with some reports suggesting the management is looking to replace him with young England international James Trafford, who has been on the rise this season with Burnley.
But according to Ficjajes, United could instead pursue a more experienced and recognized profile in the shape of Maignan who could be on his way out of Milan at the end of the season.

This would be an interesting move on the club’s part, as Maignan used to be Onana’s opposite number in the Derby della Madonnina contested between Milan and Inter.
The 29-year-old started his career with Paris Saint-Germain before he went on to make a name for himself at Lille. In the summer of 2021, he joined Milan as a replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma, and he immediately succeeded in filling in the gigantic gloves of the Italy international, playing an instrumental part in the club’s Serie A title-winning campaign in 2021/22.
The French custodian has now become the Rossoneri captain following Davide Calabria’s departure, but his future might lie away from San Siro, as his contract will expire in 2026, which could prompt Milan to sell him for relatively low figure to avoid losing him for free a year later.
Therefore, this could be INEOS’s golden opportunity to sign a capable replacement for Onana without breaking the bank.
