Man who strangled girlfriend in Akwa-Ibom arraigned

Police authorities in Akwa-Ibom State have announced the commencement of the prosecution of the 32-year-old man, Ndifreke Nelson, who strangled his estranged girlfriend, Emem Effanga, aged 39 to death in February.
According to the police, Effanga was found unconscious in her apartment and later pronounced dead at an undisclosed hospital.
Mr. Nelson was later arrested, according to Police spokesman, DSP Timfon John, who issued a statement in Uyo on Monday, March 17.
He said that the police received a report about the victim’s condition and promptly visited the scene, where they observed visible marks of violence on Effanga’s face and neck, suggesting she may have been strangled.
Investigations led the police to identify Nelson, who was reportedly the last person seen with the deceased.
It was revealed that he had visited Effanga’s residence on the morning of his birthday, February 6, 2025.
Nelson was eventually traced to a church in Uyo, where he allegedly tried to escape upon spotting the police.
However, he was swiftly apprehended.
During interrogation, he confessed to visiting Effanga that morning and requesting to use her phone to take photos for his birthday celebration on social media.
When she refused, a struggle reportedly ensued, leading to Nelson allegedly strangling Effanga and striking her head on the floor, rendering her unconscious.
He then fled the scene with her Itel Super Phone, which was recovered from him at the time of his arrest.
The police confirmed that a postmortem examination has been conducted, and the cause of death has been documented by a pathologist.
The suspect has since been charged to court, and the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, has assured the public that justice will be served.
Azare also used the opportunity to warn against domestic violence and criminal acts, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
