Manchester United are reportedly ready to ‘up the ante’ in their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers whiz Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian star is set to be one of the summer’s hottest sagas amid an expectation he departs the Molineux – despite putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract extension at the beginning of February.

It came after a winter window of Cunha being heavily linked with a mid-season switch from the struggling Midlands outfit. Then, when a deal failed to materialise with any of his suitors, he committed his future to Wolves.

However, it would appear the new deal he was granted was to allow for a more seamless summer departure. Wolves will have known since before his form began catching eyes this term that he would likely want to embark on a new venture in 2025/2026, so included a £62.5 million release clause to ensure they get their money’s worth, that he’s satisfied and that they can subsequently reinvest the funds on his replacement/s.

A fresh report from Ben Jacobs (via GiveMeSport) has claimed that Cunha’s agent has flown to England this week in order to hold a first round of talks with United, who are keen on welcoming the in-form forward along with Liam Delap in the forthcoming window.

The Reds have been granted a ‘significant boost’ in that the 25-year-old has set his sights on one of the Premier League’s typical ‘Big Six’ clubs. Winning the Europa League – therefore securing a Champions League spot – would only better their case.

Cunha, previously of Atletico Madrid, has scored 13 goals and assisted a further four in 26 appearances across the term. His efforts have proven pivotal in retaining Wolves’ top-flight status, with Vitor Pereira’s men now sitting 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

“His football IQ is absolutely sensational. He’s the one who can unlock the doors. He finds the little pockets of space and makes the right decisions at the right times,” Micah Richards said of Cunha back in November (BBC Sport).

“He’s always scanning where he needs to be and always plays the right pass. He is so key in what Wolves are trying to do. He is the best at everything.”
