Mikel Obi Says NFF Must Resign If Nigeria Fails to Qualify for 2026 World Cup

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has called for the dissolution of the entire Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board should the national team fail to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Obi issued the warning during an appearance on his “Obi One” podcast, criticizing what he described as persistent mismanagement within the federation. He emphasized that the burden of responsibility should not rest solely on the players.
Nigeria’s hopes took a blow after a 1-1 draw against South Africa in their Group C fixture stalled their push for qualification. With two matches remaining, Obi says poor leadership is jeopardizing Nigeria’s football reputation, built over decades as a continental powerhouse.
He also reminded critics that Nigeria had previously failed to reach the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, arguing that another miss under similar circumstances would reflect poorly on the NFF’s consistency and effectiveness at managing national football affairs.
