Military confrontation between India, Pakistan would be disastrous —UN warns

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged India and Pakistan to avoid military confrontation over Kashmir tensions.
He made the appeal on Tuesday during a press briefing at the UN Security Council headquarters in New York.
Guterres expressed concern over rising tensions between both South Asian nations following a deadly terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Guterres called for “maximum restraint” and warned against further escalation between India and Pakistan.
He described the current diplomatic strain as “the highest in years.”
The Secretary-General condemned the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, Diaspora Digital Media DDM, reported that at least 26 civilians died and several others sustained injuries during the coordinated assault.
He stated that targeting civilians is “unacceptable under any circumstances.
Guterres demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice through legal and transparent means.
He cautioned both governments against taking military steps that could escalate the crisis.
“A military confrontation could easily spiral out of control,” he warned.
Guterres reaffirmed that peaceful diplomacy is the only lasting solution to the Kashmir dispute.
UN offers support for dialogue
The UN chief offered his good offices to mediate between India and Pakistan.
He urged both countries to return to diplomatic channels and resume peaceful dialogue.
Guterres said the United Nations is ready to support efforts that de-escalate tensions.
“The time for restraint is now,” he added during his address to journalists.
Praise for peacekeeping contribution
Guterres acknowledged both nations’ longstanding contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions.
He said their shared history in global peace efforts could inspire a new chapter of cooperation.
He expressed hope that both nations could build trust through dialogue, not confrontation.
Security council holds closed-door talk
The UN Security Council scheduled a closed-door meeting later on Tuesday to address the India-Pakistan situation.
Council members plan to review the latest developments and explore diplomatic avenues to resolve the crisis.
The UN Secretary-General reiterated that “a military solution is no solution.”
