Mystery death: 80-year-old Colombian found lifeless in Lagos hotel room

Police in Lagos have launched an investigation following the discovery of an 80-year-old Colombian national dead in a hotel room.

The deceased, identified as Quesada Vanegas Ricardo Alfonso, was found lifeless in Room C85 at Golden Tulip Hotel, Festac town, on May 1, 2025.

Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that officers responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from the hotel.

Homicide detectives arrived at the scene around 3:45 p.m. and began immediate preliminary assessments.

The police confirmed that Mr. Alfonso had been residing at the hotel for over four months prior to his death.

Officers said there were no visible injuries or signs of foul play on the body at the time of discovery.

The corpse was transferred to the Mainland General Hospital morgue in Yaba for preservation and autopsy.

Authorities also opened a coroner’s inquest to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

As part of routine procedures, police temporarily detained some hotel staff for failing to maintain accurate guest records.

Investigators later released the staff after questioning and documentation.

The Lagos State Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation.

Hundeyin emphasized the importance of procedural integrity, assuring that the cause of death will be established through medical and forensic analysis.

He also reminded hotel operators in Lagos to comply strictly with guest registration protocols.

The management of Golden Tulip Hotel has not issued an official statement as of press time.

Residents in the area expressed shock over the incident, describing it as unusual for such a well-regarded hotel.

Authorities have contacted the Colombian embassy to notify the deceased’s family and arrange repatriation if necessary.

Police say further details will be released after the autopsy and coroner’s findings.

This incident adds to concerns about hotel safety and monitoring of long-term guests in Lagos.
