NAFDAC Seals Two Chinese Supermarkets Over Unregistered Products in Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Abuja for selling unregistered and improperly labelled products.
The agency also shut down eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market during the operation.
In a statement released Friday, NAFDAC said the enforcement followed the directive of its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.
According to the agency, its team confiscated products worth over N170 million.
The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in Jabi District, came under investigation after consumer complaints.
Surveillance by NAFDAC confirmed the outlets were selling unregistered food items. Many products carried labels written only in Chinese, violating Nigeria’s mandatory policy requiring English translations.
Although a foreign national at one supermarket denied the shop was open, the enforcement team discovered full operations were ongoing.
Products were immediately evacuated, and the premises sealed.
The operation extended to Wuse Market, where eight cosmetics shops were closed.
The outlets were found selling banned, expired, and fake products, including skin-whitening medicines, aphrodisiacs, and body-enhancement drugs.
Among the confiscated items were Maxman Capsules, Wenicks Capsules, Boobs Enlargement Cream, Curvy Weight Gain, Collagen, Glutathione Whitening Gummies, Dr. Nafisa Herbal Medicine, White Blinks, and other unregistered products.
Investigations also revealed that some shop owners posed as pharmacists and dermatologists.
They allegedly prescribed and sold these dangerous products to unsuspecting Nigerians.
NAFDAC warned that unregistered and banned substances pose serious health risks.
According to Prof. Adeyeye, the risks include skin cancer, kidney damage, irritability, and memory loss. She stressed that the agency’s priority remains protecting the health of Nigerians.
The statement reminded consumers to only patronize products with proper NAFDAC registration numbers.
It also warned investors and foreign nationals to follow due process before importing or selling goods in Nigeria.
Adeyeye said NAFDAC would not hesitate to seal any outlet selling harmful or unregistered goods.
She urged businesses to visit NAFDAC offices for proper product registration and regulatory guidance.
This latest crackdown highlights the growing concern over unregulated imports in Nigeria’s markets.
Authorities believe stronger surveillance is needed to curb the spread of fake and substandard products.
