NDLEA Commander Found Dead in Hotel

The sudden death of the Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Morrison Ogbonna, has thrown Calabar into shock and confusion.

Ogbonna was discovered lifeless in his hotel room in the early hours of Thursday.

His officers, who had gone to pick him up for an official assignment, made the sad discovery.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident was both sudden and tragic. “Some officers went to the hotel where he was staying.

They knocked several times, but there was no response. They then contacted the hotel management. When the door was finally opened, they found him dead,” the source revealed.

Ogbonna had only recently been transferred to Cross River State in August.

He was deployed to replace former commander Rachel Umebuali, who had been reassigned.

His transfer was part of routine changes within the NDLEA aimed at strengthening the agency’s operations in different states.

The news of his death has raised several questions, with colleagues and residents seeking answers.

Many are calling for a thorough investigation into what led to the sudden loss of the commander.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, said: “I can confirm to you that it is true.

But what led to the death is what I can’t readily tell you.” She explained that investigations are ongoing.

Ogbonna’s passing has created a vacuum within the state’s NDLEA command, as he was actively coordinating strategies to tackle drug trafficking and abuse in the region.

Colleagues described him as a committed officer who had taken over the command with fresh ideas and renewed zeal.

His death also comes at a time when the NDLEA has been intensifying its nationwide campaign against illicit drug use and trafficking.

The agency, under the leadership of Buba Marwa, has recorded several major seizures and arrests in recent months.

For residents of Calabar and the wider Cross River State, the commander’s death is a painful reminder of life’s uncertainties.

Many now wait for the outcome of investigations to know what really happened.
