Nigeria @65: Gov Adeleke Frees 36 Inmates

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has granted freedom to 36 inmates as part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.
The release took place at correctional facilities in Ilesa and Ile-Ife, with the governor describing the move as an act of compassion and renewal.
Governor Adeleke said the gesture was carried out under the constitutional powers vested in him by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the decision followed the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
In a proclamation signed on September 24, 2025, Adeleke confirmed he had granted amnesty to inmates under the jurisdiction of Osun State.
“By this act, I remit and release unto them all pains, penalties, and punishments that may have accrued from their convictions,” the statement read.
The 36 beneficiaries included 29 inmates from Ilesa Correctional Centre, among them Kehinde Ganiyu, Isiaka Mohammed, Oluwatosin Femi, Adebisi Adeniyi, Rotimi Paul, and Oyewole Sunday.
Another seven inmates were released from Ile-Ife Correctional Centre, including Yusuf Ola, Oyedeji Sunday, and Ojo Olaoluwa.
Most of the convicts had been jailed for minor offences, including stealing and conspiracy.
They were considered deserving of mercy after serving a significant part of their sentences.
Governor Adeleke stressed that the move reflects the true spirit of Nigeria’s Independence Day.
He described it as more than just freedom, but also an opportunity for rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start.
“As a government of the people, we remain committed to justice while extending mercy to deserving citizens.
This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for renewal and reintegration into society,” Adeleke said.
The release highlights the government’s focus on combining justice with compassion, while encouraging second chances for citizens ready to rebuild their lives.
