Nigeria Adds Mandarin to Secondary School Curriculum Amid Curriculum Review

Nigeria has officially included Mandarin Chinese in its senior secondary school curriculum following a broader review led by the National Educational Research and Development Council. The change takes effect from the 2025-2026 academic session.

Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Secretary of Education for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced the decision during the inauguration of the 14th “Chinese Corner” at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Abuja.

Mandarin will be offered as an optional international language alongside French and Arabic. The FCT has been pioneering the teaching of Chinese through “Chinese Corners,” which serve as cultural and language teaching hubs.

The Chinese Embassy and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) have pledged support through teaching materials, cultural books, and teacher capacity-building programmes in China.
